The plaza, named for the community member who worked tirelessly to save the historic airport tower from demolition, provides a welcoming outdoor space for all ages. The planters and seating at the base of the tower were designed to provide play opportunities in the center of an otherwise adult-centric park. Working under strict regulatory and structural constraints, each iteration explored different ideas of commemoration and play. The final design uses the chevron runway motif to create stacked shaded seating that commemorates and protects the iconic landmark. As the project designer I conceptualized and detailed the project from pre-design through construction documentation.
